Raising a Responsible Child: How Parents Can Avoid Overindulgent Behavior and Nurture Healthy Children
Published in Hardcover by Birch Lane Pr (October, 1995)
Author: Elizabeth M. Ellis
Average review score:

A must read for all parents!!
I am the director of a family counseling program serving families with children that have severe behavior problems. When I read this book, I was convinced that Ms. Ellis has unlocked the key to 80%-90% of what's behind today's problem children. I have been working with these children for 10 years and when I read the book, many of the children/parents I have worked with were described perfectly in the various examples. If I could only force these families to read this book and act on it - many of these severe problems could be prevented or improved significantly. I had my staff read 1 chapter a week for discussion and they were equally excited. I have given away many, many of my own copies.

As a clinician, I am delighted that I can now offer this book to any of my clients with children.

I take parenting very seriously and have read numerous books on various psychological aspects of child rearing, but this one finally puts it all together! It is an easily understandable description of the stages of a child's emotional development. It also specifically provide tools and techniques for parents to constructively support their children individually asthey develop. Dr. Berger has truly provided me with the roadmap to allowing my children to be themselves and the appropriate methods for their support in this process!

The Rape of Tutankhamun
Published in Hardcover by Michael O'Mara Books (December, 1993)
Authors: John Romber, Elizabeth Romer, and John Romer
Average review score:

Absolutely Great - All Egyptologists shoud read this!
As a student going to study my masters in Egyptology, I've been reading quite extensively on ancient Egypt. This book's title is originally got me hooked. What I did not expect was a case for the crisis in conservation in Egypt. The Romer's comment on the excavation of KV5 by Kent Weeks (a man I have heard of in archaeology). It turns out that Weeks' excavation techniques are actually speeding up the tombs rate of decay! Many people are not aware of the situation at hand. Read this, get supprtive of Egyptian conservation and don't believe that tourists are just the ones impacting the ancient monuments.

Heart-breakingly beautiful.
In this piece, the Romers take their intimate knowledge and feelings for the Valley of the Kings and put them into the most elequent plea one can ever read. They bring to our attention the shoddy excavation techniques currently being used in the Valley, particularily in the excavation of KV5, and the perilous state of practically all of the Valley's tombs. Even the tomb of Tutankhamun has experienced minor flooding, and the grand tomb of Seti I is on the verge of complete annilation. The pictures of Seti's tomb had me in tears, and the written description of its peril only made those tears flow more freely. I find it revolting how notable Egyptologists see the contents of this book as untrue, and I feel they do so because they don't want to admit/be responsible for just how true it really is. Yes, the book is sad, but if you love Egypt as much as I do, it is entirely too necessary for you to read it. If I had an address, I'd write the Romers and tell them how this piece has impacted me. Since I cannot, I will write now that one person listening is all it takes to rescue these tombs, this history, our history. I am listening. You

Rare and Commonplace Flowers: The Story of Elizabeth Bishop and Lota de Macedo Soares
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (20 January, 2002)
Authors: Carmen L. Oliveira and Neil K. Besner
Average review score:

Plesasurable reading
Rare and Commonplace Flowers innovates in the scholarly field. A carefully documented biography, it reconstructs step by step the story of Elizabeth Bishop and Lota de Macedo Soares.Carmen Oliveira's literary achievement lies in conveying this research of undeniable academid value in a very agreeable piece of storytelling.A must for Women's Studies, the book is recommended to anyone who enjoys a good read.

At last, in English!
This book is a treasure, a delightful read. It speaks to a broad range of interests. Fans of Elizabeth Bishop will enjoy learning about her relationship with Lota and her experiences during the 17 years she lived in Brazil. If you are interested in Brazilian history and politics, you will find a rare account of the early sixties in Rio de Janeiro, as the country headed toward military dictatorship. It is also a marvelous and tragic love story.

As an American living in Brazil for the past 20 years, I found it a fascinating account of how Lota and her country provided a haven for Bishop, an orphan prone to writer's block and alcoholism. Rare and Commonplace Flowers, read in addition to Bishop's letters, opens a whole new window on her writing. Ever since I read the original in Portuguese, in 1995, I have been convinced that it merits the attention of non-Portuguese speakers. Thanks to the excellent translation of Neil Besner, you've got it!

Read It! Draw It! Solve It! - Grade 1: Problem Solving for Primary Grades
Published in Paperback by Pearson Learning (February, 1997)
Authors: Elizabeth D. Miller, Bowden, and Jeri Hayes
Average review score:

Read It! Draw It! Solve It!--- Love It!
This workbook is composed of activities that combine reading, math, written expression, and problem-solving. The student must read the problem and draw a picture of how they view the passage, then they must solve the problem in a through a pictoral manner. This allows the child to show how they solve the problems while using their creativity. Teachers may visualize any errors made by the child and understand better how to help the child. This is fun and educational and what could be better?

Read It! Draw It! Solve It!
This series of books is an excellent way for children to learn about what math really means. They got the opportunity to draw out the problem that they are solving and then write the equation and finally write a sentence or more about the answer. This is great preparation for the WASL test, and for greater thinkers. All students can be successful with these materials.

The Reformation of Machismo : Evangelical Conversion and Gender in Colombia
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (April, 1995)
Author: Elizabeth E. Brusco
Average review score:

Want to know about the evangelical movement in Colombia?
This book provides a treasure of insights for anyone wanting to understand the evangelical movement in Colombia. Writing from a feminist perspective, Brusco must admit that evangelicalism radically changes the dynamics of family life for the better...I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand the religious climate in Colombia, especially in Bogotá. I found the book easy to read, except for a few pages dealing with sociological studies on machismo. The case studies and personal comments from the author greatly enhance the pleasure of reading this book.

this book shows real columbian life, not hollywood drug deals
Elizabeth Brusco brings to life the real lives of Columbians and how they deal with religion. She specifically uses examples of how protestantism is groing in Columbia and how it "reforms" the blatant stereotype of South American men as being macho, ergo the word "Machismo". I had the chance of asking her some questions about the book and viewing some pictures taken while she resided in a small village in Columbia, through my Anthropology class taught at Pacific Lutheran University by Dr. Laura Klien. This gave me an even better understanding of what is really going on in columbia, but the book still gives an abundance of information on evangelicalism in Columbia. Read this book, you won't regret it.

Refuge of the Apocalypse: Doorway into Other Dimensions
Published in Hardcover by The C.W. Daniel Company Ltd (June, 1992)
Author: Elizabeth Van Buren
Average review score:

A Fantastic Journey to Hidden Dimensions
I couldn't agree more with the previous review. This book is a rare jewel. It is far more poetic than factual, and many of the statements and assertions it contains will irritate and infuriate the skeptic and the cynic. On the other hand, this is the real deal...this book does a superb job of crystallizing the intangible spiritual forces and dimensions that make Rhedae such an unforgettable flower of eternity. It is a haunting and ultimately nonverbal book, and I'd have to say it's one of my all-time favorites. Every page is packed with awesome and nebulous mysteries. You'll either give it five stars or you'll think it's the worst piece of gibberish you've ever seen....sheer poetry from beginning to end. Vive le Cardou!

A BIG Piece of the Rennes Puzzle...
Too bad ALL of the "Rennes-les-Chateau Addicts" don't have this book... they might then have a CLUE!

This is a MARVELOUS compendium of arcane lore, compared and listed alongside details of that most interesting mystery of Southern France which makes clear the absolute ANCIENT nature of it, and makes irrelevant all the silly conjectures about the "Tomb of God" or the "Horse of God" or buried "treasure" of the 3 dimensional ilk.

Ms. Van Buren's conclusions are VERY deep and complex, but entirely in keeping with the demonstrated complexity of this phenomenon. It has proven over and over again to "shift and move" with the assumptions and expectations of the "seeker," showing us that there is not a simple nor cut-and-dried answer as so many expect to find. It is TRULY an alchemical work...

The SERIOUS Rennes-les-Chateau and "Shepherds of Arcadia" aficionado cannot afford to NOT buy this book!

Religions of the World
It is the most concise material I have found on the subject. While in school I used it for a reference book when writing papers, now I read through it when I am unsure about a religious practice. It clarifies any questions you might have on any given (major) religion.

Gorgeous illustrations, easy to understand text
This book is really beautiful! It helps the student and the teacher to explore the great wisdom traditions of the world. The illustrations are plentiful and lovely, the text easy to comprehend. A great book!
